Reset the root password
A new password from the portal, without a reinstall. Files and settings stay as they are.
Set a new root password from the server's page. Nothing on the machine is touched: files, services and sessions all carry on.
Steps
- Open the server from Servers.
- In Connect, next to Password, press Reset… to begin.
- Type RESET PASSWORD in the box and press Reset the password.
- Copy the password, then press I've copied it.
This is the Connect card, where the reset starts:
The question before it happens:
And the one time the new password is shown:
When it waits for a reboot
It works straight away when the server's guest agent is running. If it isn't, the new password takes effect at the next reboot, and until then the old one still works. The box says so and offers Reboot now:
Log in with it
Use the SSH line from the Connect card, and paste the new password when it asks. If you can't reach the server over the network at all, use the Console tab on its page, which works without the network: see Locked out of SSH.
